A Talk about Gender and the Disappeared in Lebanon

Join us this Thursday, December 13th at 7 pm at Nasawiya for a talk about analyzing the problem of the disappeared of the civil war in Lebanon from a gender-based approach.

Lyna and Chole, who are both well versed on the issue in their own capacities, will be guiding us into presenting how disappearances related to the war in Lebanon have produced indirect victims within their relatives, most of them women twice victims of their own being; how the disappearance of the male can victimize the woman a second time, by exposing her to her rights, or lack thereof.

*** Here is brief bios of Lyna and Chole: Lyna is a PhD candidate in Development Studies at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva. Her research focuses on the concept of the transition from conflict to peace after the civil war in Lebanon, with a case study of the issue of the persons who disappeared between 1975 and 1990 and whose fate remains unknown. In the past 30 years, this has resulted in countless mobilizations from their relatives – mostly women – without any agreement with the post-conflict state on how to resolve the issue.

Lyna is active in the academic, political and social spheres in Lebanon and Switzerland. She is part of Tajaddod Youth and takes part in their international projects, and is founding member of Act for the Disappeared.

Chloé is a PhD candidate at the Graduate School of Social Sciences in Paris. Her research spans the historical anthropology of war violence by looking at the phenomena of kidnappings during the war in Lebanon from 1975 to 1990. In parallel, her research interests revolve around the role of women during armed conflicts, and more particularity on the violence of the women engaged in the militias during the civil war in Lebanon.

‘Goodnight Sofia’ and ‘Price of Sex’

This Friday, we are happy to invite you to the screenings of 2 great films: one is Italian and the other is Eastern European.

At 6 pm, we will screen the Italian “Goodnight Sofia’. A girl, after suffering a serious loss, goes trough the empty streets of a town far away. She’s alone and hurt. The sounds and lights of the city take her into a journey within herself, at the roots of her pain. It is a 2012, 55 minutes film directed by Leonardo Moro. (Italian, subtitled in English)

Right after that, at 7 PM, we will screen “The Price of Sex”.
This is a 2011 produced documentary about young Eastern European women who’ve been drawn into a netherworld of sex trafficking and abuse. It is a story told by survivors; a film that gives a voice to women who were supposed to be silenced by shame, fear and intimidation. Mimi Chakarova, a photojournalist who grew up in Bulgaria, takes us on a personal, investigative journey into the shadowy world of sex trafficking from Eastern Europe to Turkey, Dubai and Greece. It is 72 minutes long. (English, no subtitles)

A discussion will follow.
See you then:)

Monthly Info Session 1.3 – Dr. Charbel Nahas on the Sponsorship System

Join us for the Anti-Racism Movement (ARM)’s fourth information session with former Minister of Labor Dr. Charbel Nahas, who will speak to us about the sponsorship system. This system, which governs the relationship between employers and migrant domestic workers (MDWs), renders MDWs vulnerable to abuse and exploitation and then traps workers in these abusive situations.
Dr. Nahas argues that there is no such thing as the sponsorship system and proposes an alternative way of addressing the legal framework governing MDWs’ lives in Lebanon.

The sponsorship system is one of the main elements of oppression and injustice that MDWs face in Lebanon. It binds them to one employer, denies their right freedom of movement and employment, and grants employers the freedom to treat their employees as they please.

Whether you want to know more about this system, or you already know about it but disagree with Dr. Nahas’ view, or if you simply find it an interesting perspective worth discussing, join the debate on Monday, February 11th at 6 pm at the Nasawiya cafe!

See you there
