Women’s Day Sit-In
70-something feminists gathered on the Corniche Ain El Mreisseh to celebrate International Women’s Day and protest the situation of women in Lebanon today. Based on all the feedback received yesterday and earlier today from over 2,400 women, feminists made banners that answered the question: What do women in Lebanon think about women’s rights in Lebanon? The most common reaction was: “our rights don’t exist,” “the living situation for women is horrible,” “we have superficial rights but nothing to protect or empower us,” and “there has been little improvement over the decades, but we’re very far behind in claiming our rights.”
So we sat on the Corniche pavement and confronted the passers-by with issues of harassment and violations of rights. The importance of the event lies in the fact that we managed to invade a public space that is highly sexist to claim it back on Women’s Day. Here are some photos and Happy Women’s Day!
