Trade Unions and Women: Rights through Organizing
منذ أكثر من قرن، بدأ العمال في جميع أنحاء العالم بتنطيم أنفسهم في نقابات عمالية من أجل تشكيل قوة تواجه أصحاب العمل وللمحاولة على الحصول على حصة أكبر من الأرباح وثمار الانتاج. نجح العمال من خلال نقاباتهم في الحصول على الكثير من الحقوق التي تؤخذ اليوم كأمر مسلم به مثل الضمان الاجتماعي، والتقاعد، و8 ساعات يوم العمل، والإجازات المدفوعة الأجر، إجازة الأمومة، الحد الأدنى للأجور، الخ. ولا تزال النقابات العمالية اليوم الشكل الرئيسي لتنظيم للعمال من أجل تعزيز حقوقهم ومصالحهم.

تظل النقابات أداة أساسية للمرأة العاملة لتمكين نفسها وتحصيل حقوقها من خلال العمل الجماعي والتنظيم.
المسائل الرئيسية التي ستطرح:
ما هي النقابات؟ ما هي أهدافها؟ كيف تعمل؟ ماذا حققت؟ لماذا هي من أبرز وأقوى أدوات التغيير؟ ماذا تكسب النساء العاملات عبر تنظيم أنفسهن؟
ستدور الجلسة باللغة العربية.

For over a century, workers around the world have organized themselves in trade unions in order to form a balance facing the power of employers and to try to have a bigger share of the profits and the outcome of production. Workers through trade unions succeeded to obtain many rights that are taken today for granted such as social security, retirement, the 8 hours working day, paid vacations, maternity leaves, minimum wage, etc.
Trade unions are still the main form of organizing for workers to advance their rights and interests, and as more and more women are entering the labour force and are found in informal and vulnerable employment, and are lacking many rights such as social security, maternity leaves, job security, etc.. the issue of organizing women workers becomes prominent for them to secure their rights and to counter more layers of discrimination such as sexual harassment at work.
Trade unions remain an essential tool for working women to empower themselves and reap rights and benefits through working collectively and organizing.
We are hosting a discussion on this, facilitated by Nabil Abdo next Tuesday at 7 PM at Nasawiya. The discussion will raise a few key questions:
What are trade unions?
What are their objectives?
How do they work?
What they have achieved?
Why are they a powerful tool for change?
What would women workers gain from organizing?
