People from across Lebanon are invited to join a candlelight vigil to remember all the victims of the collapsed building in Achrafieh, and especially those who were not paid proper respects because they were not Lebanese.

The vigil, located in Fassouh area next to the site of the incident at 6:30pm on Wednesday January 25, is being held to remember people who died because of negligence, and those who have been discriminated against by our racist community, even at desperate moments like these and after their horrifying deaths.

Everyone is welcome to join the ceremony by taking along a torch or a candle that can be lit in memory of those who have died or in support of those who are still suffering from injuries.

This event is about raising awareness of the issue, as well as letting victims – and their families – know we are thinking of them.

So join us to honor the invisible soldiers of our daily life and to show everyone that no one should be discriminated against based on race, religion, class or gender.

أصدرتْ حملة مقاطعة داعمي “إسرائيل” في لبنان البيانَ الآتي:

هل بات لبنانُ مسرحاً لمن هبّ ودبّ من داعمي العدوّ الإسرائيليّ؟ فبعد بلاسيبو، ودي جاي تييستو، وآرمين فان بيورين، وغيرهم ممن أحيوْا حفلاتٍ في لبنان بعد إحيائهم حفلاتٍ ف…ي “إسرائيل”، متجاهلين جرائمَ هذه الدولة وعنصريتَها واحتلالَها وانتهاكَها لسيادتنا، يستضيف كازينو لبنان حفلاً للمغنّية لارا فابيان في عيد العشّاق (14 و15 شباط 2012). الجدير ذكرُه أنّ فابيان غنّت في فرنسا، وباللغة العبريّة، في احتفال الذكرى الستين لتأسيس”إسرائيل” (25 أيّار 2008)، أغنيةً من الموروث الاستيطانيّ الصهيونيّ للشاعرة الصهيونيّة نعومي شيمر، معلنة في نهاية العرض الكلماتِ الآتية: “إسرائيل، أنا أحبّكِ!”. كما سبق أن غنّت في تل أبيب (في نهاية آذار 2010)، وشاركتْ في احتفال “سركل بن غوريون” الصهيونيّ في بروكسل. إننا نناشد كازينو لبنان، وهو مؤسّسة تملك الدولةُ اللبنانيّةُ نصيبًا كبيرًا فيها، سحبَ الدعوة من هذه المغنّية الداعمة للصهيونيّة. ونناشد الرعاة سحبَ تمويلهم لزيارتها. كما ننبّه وزارتي السياحة والثقافة إلى هذا الاختراق التطبيعيّ الخطير للبنان. وندعو مواطني شعبنا كافّةً إلى الامتناع عن الذهاب إلى حفل فابيان: فمن يغنّي في الكيان الصهيونيّ يتغاضى عن جرائمه؛ فكيف إذا غنّى في ذكرى اغتصاب “إسرائيل” لفلسطين؟ إنّ غناء فابيان في الذكرى الستين لتأسيس الكيان الغاصب هو تأييدٌ فاضحٌ للممارسات الإسرائيليّة الإجراميّة في فلسطين ولبنان والجولان والبلاد العربيّة طوال هذه العقود. إنّ من يغنّي للاحتلال والعنصرية لا يمكن أن يغنّي لفالانتين، لا يمكن أن يغنّي للعشق والحبّ!

We Demand The US Government Stop Funding Murders By The Egyptian Military!

On November 19, 2011, at least one Egyptian protester was killed and over 670 injured as police attacked protesters in Tahrir Square, the center of Egypt’s revolutionary mobilizations. The protesters called for an end to military rule and the fulfillment of the revolution’s demands for democracy and social justice, and were met by harsh repression reminiscent of the revolution’s earliest days.

During the day protests spread to every major city and town in Egypt, and another protester was murdered by the military in Alexandria.
As human rights and social justice organizations and activists, we have been inspired by the accomplishments of the Egyptian people in bringing an end to the Mubarak regime. Popular movements in the U.S. and around the world have taken inspiration from the Egyptian revolution, which is the most often cited inspiration for the Occupy movement.
But as Egyptian revolutionaries have reported, despite the fall of the Mubarak regime, the struggle is far from over. Human rights abuses and military repression continue in Egypt, directed against Egyptian popular movements and activists. The huge protest on November 18th, and the resumption of the occupation of Tahrir Square which the military so savagely attacked on the 19th, were a climax of a swelling wave of actions against military trials of civilians, the regime’s murders of protesters in the joint Christian/Muslim demonstrations against anti-Copt prejudice, torture and coercion against prisoners, and repeated statements by the military that it would hold on to power after elections were held.
On October 30, 2011, prominent Egyptian blogger and activist Alaa Abdel Fattah was detained by the military for his opposition to military courts trying Egyptian civilians. Alaa, along with activist Bahaa Saber (detained but later released on bail), refused to be questioned by the military to further demonstrate his opposition to military trials for civilians. Both men criticized the fact that the military is in charge of investigating the killing of at least 27 people by military and police forces on October 9th, when troops and riot police violently dispersed mass peaceful protests around the state television building, known as Maspero.
Their detention followed by three days the murder by torture by police officers of Essam Ali Atta, who was killed by repeated use over two days of high-pressure water through a hose in his mouth and rectum. The day before Atta was tortured to death, the Alexandria Criminal Court sentenced the police officers who murdered Khaled Said to seven years each, causing anger and disbelief among Egyptians, especially since military courts have handed down much longer sentences to civilians in farcical trials. Mourners took Essam’s body in a coffin to Tahrir Square in a march, and raised demands that SCAF relinquish power to a civilian government and issue a clear timetable for when this will happen.

On October 30, thousands of Egyptians took to the streets to demand the release of political prisoners and an end to the unjust military trials, and have called for international solidarity with their campaign. The Egyptian Campaign to End Military Trials of Civilians called a global day of action against military trials on November 12th and is planning more such actions in the near future.
Nearly 12,000 Egyptian civilians have been tried by military courts since the fall of Mubarak. The tribunals convicted 8,071, including 1,836 suspended sentences; a further 1,225 convictions are awaiting ratification by the military. In such military trials, civilians are unable to call witnesses or review the evidence against them and have limited access to lawyers and restricted avenues to appeal. Minors sentenced in military courts serve their sentences in adult prisons, where torture remains common. Military courts have sentenced civilians to death; 18 civilians have been executed by the SCAF government. Women demonstrators have been subjected to sexual assault in the form of “virginity tests” by the Army, and men demonstrators subjected to electric shocks and other forms of cruel, inhumane and degrading treatment.
While judges and lawyers in Egypt’s civil legal system have been on the front lines of the Egyptian revolution, judges in the military justice system are military officers subject to a chain of command, and therefore are forbidden to challenge illegal or immoral instructions by superiors.
These military trials and the practices surrounding them are in violation of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), which obligates states to protect and ensure the right to fair, independent and impartial trials and freedom of expression in its article 14. Egypt is a signatory to this Covenant.
The Egyptian revolutionary movement has called for the end of the state of emergency which has existed in Egypt since 1967. While SCAF has claimed that the referral of civilians for military trials would end when the state of emergency is lifted, it has refused to set a date and has instead utilized this as a broad mandate to bring all manner of civil issues before military, rather than civil, courts.
The connection between the accumulation of such grievances against the regime was demonstrated most poignantly by Alaa Abdel Fattah, who sent a message from prison to his supporters asking them to celebrate his thirtieth birthday on November 18th by joining the planned million man march in Tahrir Square. Many of them did so, and faced the bullets and tear gas of the very military claiming the right to try Alaa and other heroes for the sole crime of demanding the completion of the revolution begun on January 25th.
We stand with Alaa Abdel Fattah and the No Military Trials Campaign in its pursuit of justice. We note that we have both a special responsibility and an opportunity in this cause, as the U.S. government has promised billions in loans to Egypt since Mubarak’s fall, and has continued to provide the $1.3 billion in annual aid to the Egyptian military as it did under Mubarak. The US is also the main manufacturer of the tear gas used against Egyptian protesters. We demand this money, used to shoot peaceful protesters, be cut off, and that exports of tear gas and all other military materiel be stopped. Instead that money should be used to fund the jobs and services for which youth from Cairo to New York have rallied in the streets.
As activists in the US we note with outrage the shameful parallels between the actions of the US-funded Egyptian government and our own city, state and federal governments. These are of course not accidental parallels, as the US, Egypt, and their Zionist partner have for decades swapped tips, aided each other in funding and intelligence against dissidents, exchanged prisoners to facilitate their secret detention and torture, and so on.
The worst recent example of our own government’s Stasi-style repression is that carried out against New York’s Muslim community. The very day on which millions flooded back into Tahrir, many hundreds of Muslims and their allies rallied in Foley Square in Manhattan in response to media revelations that the New York Police Department, advised by a CIA agent, was spying on EVERY Muslim business, house of worship, student club and neighborhood in New York’s five boroughs. We also note that the NYPD, along with other US police agencies and Federal “security” agencies, have held many joint training sessions with Zionist military, intelligence and police agencies. After all, the US only supports the Egyptian government diplomatically and financially because of its support for Israel, and thus its support for a US-dominated Middle East.
What’s more as supporters of Occupy Wall Street and the other Occupy sites, we note with anger the nationwide coordination of local and federal authorities in simultaneous raids against Occupy sites leading to brutal police violence and mass detentions.
We demand an end to military rule in Egypt. We stand with the Egyptian people in their effort to end the military’s involvement in politics, to put on trial all criminal and corrupt elements of the former regime, and to enjoy their democratic rights, bought with their precious blood, so that all of Egypt’s resources, earthly and human, be returned to her people for their own benefit. We know in this battle the millions of Occupiers fighting to reclaim their resources stand in solidarity with their Egyptian brothers and sisters.

The international solidarity network, Women Living Under Muslim Laws (WLUML) calls for the immediate release of Manal Al-Sharif. Saudi authorities have arrested an activist who launched a campaign to challenge a ban on women driving in the conservative kingdom. The media spokesman of the Directorate General of Prisons in Saudi Arabia, Colonel Dr Ayoub Ben, has confirmed that Manal Al-Sharif has been charged with breach of public order and security, and with ‘deliberately inciting the media and other Saudi women’ to drive cars. She will be detained for a further five days pending investigation. There are reports that Al-Sharif has signed a pledge in prison not to drive again in Saudi Arabia. UPDATE: Al-Sharif’s prison sentence has been extended for a further ten days, starting from Thursday 26 May. Women’s rights activist Wajeha al-Huwaider was called in for questioning by her employers, Saudi Aramco, regarding her support for Manal, and forced to sign a pledge not to support
the 17 June campaign. Al-Huwaider added the disclaimer that she will continue demanding the right of women to drive through different channels until it is codified into law.

Manal Al-Sharif, a 32 years old IT security consultant at Saudi Aramco, posted a video on the internet of her behind the wheel, talking about the challenge of having to rely on drivers. The YouTube video, posted on Thursday 19 May, and which appears to have been taken down, attracted more than 500,000 views and shows Manal Al-Sharif, who learned to drive in the US, driving her car in Khobar in the oil-producing Eastern Province. “Police arrested her at 3am this morning,” said Maha Taher, another activist who launched her own campaign for women driving four months ago to spread awareness of the issue (Source: Reuters in Jeddah).The campaign Al-Sharif launched is aimed at teaching women to drive and encouraging them to start driving from 17 June, using foreign-issued licences. Anti-driving campaign have called for punishment for women who seek to drive men. Among these calls is a campaign demanding all men to beat up women attempting to drive. The men have been told to use the
ir igals (head bands) to strike women behind the wheels in the streets.

“I’m worried a lot about Manal because they might make a court case against her. The problem is there’s no written laws in Saudi Arabia. It all depends on the judge’s mood and his interpretation.” said Al-Huwaider. Although there is no written law that specifically bans women from driving, there are fatwas issued against women driving and citizens must use locally issued licences which are not issued to women, making it effectively illegal for them to drive. “When the police stopped her they told her she violated the ‘norms’. There is no law that says women can’t drive in Saudi Arabia and this arrest is unjust. She is a role model for a lot of people and the arrest will provoke her supporters. Now more women want to drive,” Taher said (Source: Reuters in Jeddah). In the early 1990s, members of a similar campaign were arrested and some were fired from their jobs.
